Louis van Gaal has expressed his desire to sign a creative midfielder at Manchester United.
The Dutchman has struggled with a player in that position, which has forced him to move Wayne Rooney from a striker’s position to the centre of the park. There were several questions raised to field the England international in the midfield position.
However, Van Gaal has now confirmed that United need a midfielder to strengthen the squad and that is something which could be addressed later in the summer transfer window.
“Signing a creative player should be our priority this summer. I’m looking for balance and I need it in midfield,” Van Gaal said.
“In the last few games I’ve played Adnan Januzaj and Angel Di Maria in the midfield positions, and you need a certain balance for that kind of creative player.”
“Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie are also creative players so then you have four of them, and you still have to look for balance in your team.”
“Wayne is playing in midfield because there is no one else. He’s happy to do so otherwise he should come to me and say he’s not, but he never does. He’s always friendly to me and wants to perform.”
“But of course when the whole world is writing that he has to be in the striker’s position then he will be thinking ‘hey, maybe’. He’s human,” he added.
What are United’s options
United are long been monitoring AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman. The Dutch international has played under Van Gaal and since his appointment as the Red Devils manager he has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
However, his injury that time forced United to drop their interest in signing him last summer. He once again picked up another injury, which he is yet to recover. Only if he recovers, United will consider a move in signing Van Gaal’s compatriot.
United could force their attention in signing Juventus star Paul Pogba. He left Old Trafford because he was not given a chance by their former manage Sir Alex Ferguson, which led to his departure.
With Van Gaal in reign, United could make an approach to secure his services in the summer transfer window.
