Manchester United player of the year, David De Gea is in the middle of a transfer tussle with Real Madrid favourites to land the Spanish goalkeeper.
The former Atletico Madrid man has been key to United’ performances this season as the Red Devils returned to the Champions league, having finished fourth.
It is believed that De Gea is keen to return to Spain and Real Madrid is the destination. Despite the Old Trafford outfit offering him a mega-money extension, Van Gaal has conceded previously that the decision rests with the player and he is not too confident.
However, in a recent interview with the Times, Van Gaal has stated that he was not too sure about De Gea’s quality at the start of the season. The Dutchman insists that he has been pleasantly surprised with De Gea’s development as a player and would love to retain him.
“He has made very good development this year because in the beginning I was not so sure of him.
“But now he is fantastic and has saved us a lot of times.”
De Gea has been ever present for the Reds this term and has saved them on countless occasions. Turning defeats into draws and draws to narrow wins, the Spanish shot-stopper has been one of the best players in the league.
De Gea had mixed start to his Manchester United career, but his quality was never in doubt. Especially last season, De Gea showed signs of a promising young keeper who could reach a world class level.
Amidst all the transfer talk, where it seems De Gea might be headed to Spain, Louis Van Gaal’s opinion about the want-away star might not do him any favours when it comes to convincing De Gea to stay.
