Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is optimistic about his side’s to four ambitions after the Reds staged a late comeback to snatch a points against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday night. The Reds currently languish in tenth spot, 9 points adrift of the top four position. Rodgers however believes that Daniel Sturridge can fire the Merseyside giants in the top four, once he returns from injury in the new year.
When asked if the Anfield side could close the gap going into the busy festive period, Rodgers said, “Yes, absolutely. It is always going to be a big challenge and of course we have to make up points, but we have shown that this is a club that can go on a run of games”.
Liverpool must take inspiration from their last season’s successive run of 11 victories and with Sturridge set to be back after a long term layoff, Rodgers claims his side can definitely reach their aspirations. “In the second half of last season, we went on a run of 11 wins and the most important thing is the confidence. Bring Sturridge back in January and we can get back to being that team.”
“His rehab has been done in Los Angeles and he is now going to Boston and he will move on to a specialist facility there. Hopefully in the early part of the New Year, he will be back. At some point in January, we will get him back.”
In reality, Liverpool have been way below their best; the obvious reason being that Luis Suarez is being heavily missed. Moreover, the Reds have been very fragile defensively for which Rodgers must take the blame. However, there were encouraging signs against Arsenal, as the home side dominated the match but have only one point to show for their display. Liverpool now travel to Burnley on Boxing Day in their next Premier League encounter.
