Liverpool have confirmed defender Martin Skrtel has signed a new contract to extend his Anfield stay.

The 30-year-old had one year left on his earlier contract and was linked with a move away from Anfield. He was a transfer target for Italian giants Inter Milan as they look to strengthen their back four.

However, the Slovakian has snubbed a chance to join the Serie A outfit and also ended the speculation surrounding his future to bed by committing his future to the Merseyside club.

A statement on Liverpool’s official website read, “Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has today committed his future to the Reds by signing a new contract with the club.”

“As the first week of pre-season training nears a conclusion, the Slovakian put pen to paper on the fresh extension.”

With Skrtel’s future secured, Brendan Rodgers has now the services of Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Tiago Ilori as the first choice centre-backs in the squad. They have also added several new faces to the squad.

The Reds have been very active in the summer transfer market as they have signed James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne in this window so far.

Liverpool will be looking forward to get back into top four and return to the Champions League. After a disappointing campaign, they will be eagerly hoping to bounce back in the upcoming season.
