It has been reported in the media that Liverpool seemingly have registered an interest in Valencia’s highly rated striker Roberto Soldado, who is also a target for Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
According to latest report from The Evening Standard, Liverpool are in pole position to sign the former Real Madrid striker, as Spurs are unwilling to meet his buy-out clause, which is believed to be around £25 million.
It is understood that the North London outfit had offered £17 million for the 28-year-old, but it was rejected straight-away.
According to Valencia president, Amadeo Salvo, all the potential buyers will have to trigger the player’s release clause and that too within the 3rd of August.
It has been reported that while Spurs are reluctant to raise their bid, Liverpool are willing to meet Valencia’ valuation of Soldado and could present an offer within next week.
Soldado is a brilliant striker – a terrific goal poacher to be precise. Since, joining the Los Che from Getafe, back in 2010-11, he has scored 25 goals and above in each and every season.
During his two years stay with La Liga outfit Getafe, he scored 13 and 20 goals respectively. That indicates since 2008-09, he has been playing at a consistent level and reached his peak last season where he scored 30 goals.
It remains to be seen, whether he can continue playing at this level for another three-to-four years or not. This is the ideal time for any class striker to reach the zenith of his career and Soldado is of no exception. Given proper support, like he got at Valencia, there’s no reason why he can’t encore that magic in England too.
£25 million may seem too much for a player who will reach 30 in two years’ time, but one has to understand that players like him can make a huge difference to the side finishing in and out of top four.
The problem with Liverpool is if they buy Soldado, they would have too many strikers at their disposal, considering the fact that Suarez would stay at the club. The Reds already have Sturridge, Aspas,Borini and Suarez – all of them can play as lone strikers – and buying Soldado would add an unnecessary competition for one single spot, when it is already crowded.
There is no harm in improving the depth of the squad or the first team but Liverpool needs reinforcement in other areas of the pitch too. The money could be utilized in a better way, keeping in mind the need of the situation.
