Liverpool ended their disappointing season with a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Stoke yesterday.
There will be plenty of questions raised about Brendan Rodgers and the players as to why they have fallen short everytime they were expected to show up and deliver, but in the end, the season is over, opportunity is lost.
It is time for Liverpool to make the necessary changes, address their problems and look forward to a better season next year.
The manager along with several players are facing uncertain futures on the back of a dismal campaign and here are three things to look forward to next season.
Manager
Even the most loyal will have to consider Brendan Rodgers’ position at Liverpool. He has done nothing to prove that he is the right man to take Liverpool forward.
It will be interesting to see who FSG bring in, should they decide to part ways with Brendan Rodgers.
The likes of Klopp and Benitez have been linked to the Anfield job. While it makes sentimental sense to want Rafa back, the current players do not suit his style of play. Jurgen Klopp’s high pressing football and attacking mentality will be a far better fit.
Also, not to mention, Klopp is a far more balanced manager than Benitez, who has the tendency to go missing in league games.
Raheem Sterling
One of the main things to look forward to next season is whether Liverpool can hold onto Raheem Sterling.
It is not a matter of dependence because Liverpool are not dependent on Raheem Sterling. Liverpool have a philosophy of signing young talents and developing them, so that they achieve their potential with the reds and drive the club to success.
But that philosophy is failing if those talents leave the club whilst still in the development stage.
Sterling being sold (bar a ridiculous offer) sends out a wrong message. It will be interesting to see what FSG do in this case.
Steven Gerrard
Liverpool’s greatest ever player was given a send off, nobody would have dreamt of. The lack of desire and effort shown by other Liverpool players in Gerrard’s last two games was disgraceful.
One of the main issues this season was the lack of leadership and character in the Liverpool team. As soon as they concede, heads seem to drop in the Liverpool camp and it goes from bad to worse.
The likes of Agger, Reina, Carragher etc have left the club over the last few years and the only proper leader left was Steven Gerrard, who is gone now.
Despite the efforts from Henderson and Sakho, neither are close to Gerrard or Carragher were in terms of leadership and a presence in the dressing room. How do Liverpool address that?
All in all, it promises to be an interesting season next year for Liverpool. 75 days and counting.
