Liverpool have opened talks over a possible new contract with Luis Suarez’ agent, Pere Guardiola, with an intention to keep the talisman striker at Anfield and out of the reach of Europe’s heavy weights for the prime of his career.

According to reports from The Guardian, Liverpool’s managing director, Ian Ayre, flew to Barcelona to hold preliminary talks with Guardiola. There was no official contract offer as yet but the meeting is only suggestive of the fact that Liverpool are willing to tie Suarez down with a mega offer, making him the highest paid player at Anfield.

The Uruguayan has two-and-a-half-years remaining on his contract and as per the report, Liverpool’s owner Fenway Sport Group were reluctant to extend his contract mid-way through the season, but his sensational form, 17 goals in 11 appearances has forced the owners to think otherwise.

Liverpool are aware that Suarez will be in demand next summer with Real Madrid are thought to be interested in getting the signature of the 26-year-old. The Los Blancos registered an interest in him last summer but there was no concrete offer in place for him, but they’re expected to be one of his potential suitors at the end of the campaign yet again.

Suarez was named the 2013 player of the year at the Football Supporters’ Federation Awards at the Emirates Stadium on Monday, where he said that “coming back to play” at Anfield was the highlight of the year, while credited his relationship with the Liverpool fans as key to his change of heart.
