Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who is currently on loan in Italy with Napoli, is said to be heading for a permanent exit from the club, with the Spaniard set to activate a release clause in his contract.
Reina was sent on loan at Napoli where he has performed well under former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, who originally bought him at the Anfield club in 2005.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers recently stated that Reina has no future at the club, and now the Daily Mirror have reported that the keeper could be looking to activate a contract clause that values him at €5m in order to push through a permanent move away from Anfield.
“Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli he was looking to move as he penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he’d worked with and thanked everyone for his time for Liverpool,” said Rodgers.
However Reina insists that he hasn’t confirmed his departure. He told BBC Sport:
“Liverpool got another goalkeeper [Simon Mignolet] and they told me they were happy to loan me for a season.
“It was strange but I don’t regret it. The only thing about the letter is that I just could say goodbye in a different way and I couldn’t do it [in person]. There are always ups and downs in a career and in the last two-and-a-half years at Liverpool there were different methods and perhaps I didn’t do as good as I used to with Rafa.”
The ideal situation for Reina would be to secure a move to Napoli or anywhere permanently, as it becomes increasingly clear that Rodgers doesn’t want him anymore. The Spanish keeper has also hinted of his desire to join MLS at some point in future.
