A number of clubs seem to have enquired Liverpool about the availability of Joe Gomez, and have expressed their interest in taking the defender on loan. Newly-promoted Brighton have been keen to strengthen their squad and add the Englishman to their squad. Several Championship clubs including Birmingham City have also enquired about the player.
However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants to keep the defender at the club, according to Mirror.
20-year-old Gomez signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2015 and immediately impressed as Brendan Rodgers used the player in the left-back position. A season-ending injury in one of the international breaks meant the youngster couldn’t build on the momentum as he was kept out for several months.
The player returned to action last season but couldn’t get a chance to regularly get enough minutes in the senior team.
However, with Liverpool back in the Champions League, they will need a larger squad and good players like Gomez to ensure they can make a mark in all the competitions they’re a part of.
Gomez offers the quality of playing anywhere in the backline and will be a good player to have in the squad. At the same time, he has shown glimpses of talent and getting regular game time at his age seems imperative as well. If Liverpool decided to send him on loan to a Premier League side, he will be able to get regular minutes in high-quality, competitive matches, which will give help his game.
It will be a tough decision when it comes to Gomez, and Klopp will have to make sure he keeps the interest of both the player, and the club in mind while choosing anything.
