Liverpool defender Glen Johnson admits that the chances of him still being at the club next season are slim, however he is still willing to discuss a new contract at Anfield.
Johnson’s current deal expires in the summer and there hasn’t been a new offer on the table yet. He has been linked with a move abroad while Premier League team West Ham have also shown an interest in signing their former player.
Johnson said as quoted by ESPN: “Everyone knows where I am. [But] I have no contract, and I don’t think that will change.”
The 30-year-old started in Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at Hull that effectively ended the Reds’ any realistic chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. However, the former Chelsea defender is adamant that he will keep fighting till the end to help Liverpool secure a spot in the Europa League next season.
Johnson added: “Every team wants to finish as high in the Premier League as possible. With the Europa League, you do get a lot more games, but it’s a competition you would rather be in than not.
“We’re all professionals, otherwise we would not be at a club like Liverpool. We’ve got four more games to concentrate on to try to get a few more points. That’s what we will concentrate on doing.”
Brendan Rodgers has urged Liverpool owners to back him with cash in the summer transfer window and he feels the squad is in dire need of two or more world class players which will help the club mount a serious title challenge next season.
Signing a right back should be a top priority for Liverpool as the lack of quality in that position is quite alarming. With Johnson (who is seemingly past his best) all set to depart, young Javier Manquillo hasn’t quite impressed during his loan period and Jon Flanagan has struggled with fitness. The right-back position needs immediate reinforcement.
The Reds were recently linked with a move for Southampton’s young full back Nathaniel Clyne. The England international is also wanted by Manchester United and other English heavy weights therefore his price up could rise should Liverpool decide to enter into a bidding war.
