One down, six to go! Liverpool’s destiny of winning the Premier League title now rests on their own hands!
Trepidation still lingers however. This is a club that has not won Premier League title since 1990, and have consistently failed to cross the final hurdle.
Liverpool had been in this situation before. They were out in front in the title race with six games to go, but they blew it. It was the 1996-97 season, the year before club legend Jamie Carragher made his debut!
And this is what Carragher fears now. That the dream of becoming the best in the country will wither away in a blink of an eye.
“You might think — and I’ve heard Brendan [Rodgers] say — that even if Liverpool don’t win, they can use this experience to push on. Maybe. But the chance might not come again,” said Carragher, as quoted in The Times.
Carragher was involved in the title race before, 2002 and 2009, but on both the occasions, Liverpool weren’t in the driving seat with six games left to go.
Thereby, there is a genuine sense of belief, as we saw banners flying around Anfield with messages like – “Anything is possible for those who believe” or “Make us Dream”.
Taking the words of Tony Barrett, this presents the best opportunity for Liverpool to win the title in the Premier League era. The equation is simple: win six games, you’re champions. Though it is easier said than done.
