Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic has been handed a four match suspension for his red card he picked up in 1-1 draw with Basel in the Champions League back in December.
Markovic used his arm and struck Behrang Safari in an attempt to get the better off the defender, an act for which he was given the marching orders immediately.
The draw was not enough in the end to send Liverpool through as a result they dropped down to the Europa League where they face Besiktas in the last 32 on Thursday.
Markovic was certain to get a one match suspension but UEFA’s disciplinary committee found the incident worthy of a harsher punishment.
The Serbian international took twitter to express his disbelief. Rodgers will now miss one of his most improved players this season in their Europa League campaign.

Lazar Markovic 4 match European ban, confirmed. Absolutely farcical, arguably should have been rescinded, in my opinion. Ridiculous
