Deal close – Manchester United target to become Liverpool’s first signing in January

It is an open secret that Liverpool are actively looking to sign a goal keeper in the January transfer window to challenge Simon Mingolet for the #1 spot.

Mignolet has cut a frustrating figure this season and has come under strong criticism from all corners, prompting Brendan Rodgers to finally drop him for good, which he explains will be for an ‘indefinite’ period.

Brad Jones has been used in the last two Liverpool matches, but the Aussie keeper has been far from convincing as well.

Liverpool have been linked with Fiorentina’s Norberto Neto in the past couple of months, but according to reports in Italy, the Reds are closing in on a deal to sign Sergio Romero, who was linked with a move to Manchester United early in the summer.

Italian media outlet TMW claim that Liverpool are close to securing a deal for the Sampdoria goal keeper, and his agent Mino Raiola, who is also the representative of Mario Balotelli, is masterminding a move behind.

As per the reports, contacts are ongoing between both the clubs and that the deal is a ‘distinct possibility’.

Romero was one of the top performers for Argentina in the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil caught the attention of Manchester United in summer, with GDS claiming Louis van Gaal wanted the 27-year-old to serve as a back-up for David de Gea.

It was rumoured that he had rejected a move to join United, but Romero quashed such talks saying he would be a fool to do so.

Many lies have been told, for example, that I refused the transfer to Manchester United. A crazy thing,” said Romero while speaking to Radio Nacional

TMW didn’t report anything about the transfer value of Romero, but Liverpool could get him on cheap in January. In that case, he could become Liverpool’s first signing in the January transfer window.
