Jamie Vardy

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy is one step closer to joining Arsenal this summer. The striker is currently on international duty with England, but Arsenal are working hard to secure his transfer before Euro 2016 commence in France from 10th June.

Last night, the Guardian exclusively broke the news that the Gunners had triggered Vardy’s release clause and are ready to prise the England international from Leicester City in a deal worth around £20m.

Vardy, who played a key role in Leicester’s fairytale Premier League triumph in 2015/16, signed an improved three-and-a-half-year contract in February, but it seems he is all set to join the Gunners in the next few days.

According to journalist Ben Fairthorne, who works for CNN and The Mail, Vardy is set for Arsenal medical at Colney around 2pm on Sunday. The deal could be announced by the club on Monday.

Vardy will travel to France with the England squad ahead of Euro 2016 on Monday and Arsenal are desperate to complete his deal before that.

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has confirmed Arsenal’s bid for Vardy in an interview to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

According to reports from the English press, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has played a huge part in persuading his compatriot to join him at Emirates Stadium.

Vardy scored 24 goals last season for Leicester and set a new Premier League record by scoring in 10 consecutive league games. He will become Arsenal’s second major signing of the summer following the arrival of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Manchester United and Liverpool were also thought to be interested in signing Vardy, but the Red Devils passed on the opportunity to sign him, with Sky Sports reporting that Jose Mourinho is only focussed on getting the signature of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In fact, United have reportedly agreed on personal terms for the Swede striker.

Liverpool also reportedly offered the player £140,000 a week, but it seems the striker favours a move to London instead. As it stands, it is only a matter of time for the deal to be announced officially.
