The Pauling stable has a healthy 20 per cent strike rate with its runners at Ffos Las, so that is a good sign. Mister Watson chased home The Edgar Wallace on racecourse debut in a Hereford bumper in March 2020. He also outran massive odds of 66/1 on his second start over hurdles last November when filling the same spot behind Red Rookie.
Plenty of subsequent winners were in-behind Mister Watson that day. He was also home in front of Pipesmoker, who has back form with Grade 1 novice chasers Sporting John and Chantry House. If Mister Watson turns up in that shape today, then he is the one beat without question.
He was runner-up for a third on his final start in May before a summer break. Mister Watson was the only to get anywhere near Kim Bailey’s Sayadam that day with the front two pulling 17 lengths and upwards clear of the rest of the field. Again, it just seemed like Mister Watson had bumped into that day.
On all known form this looks easier, so this might finally be the day he wins. Kielan Woods now takes the ride for the first time too.
