Murphy’s yard comes into today absolutely flying on a 31 per cent strike rate with its runners in the last fortnight. Alpha Carinae found the track and trip at Kempton on her chasing debut too sharp last time out when third. After winning an Irish Point at Stowlin, she joined her current stable and landed her British bow in a Newcastle bumper.
Mares that have won both between the flags and a National Hunt Flat race often need greater tests of stamina over obstacles. Since winning her hurdles debut over 2m 4f at Perth, Alpha Carinae has posted her best form at longer distances. She ran a fine fourth in a 2m 5f Warwick novice hurdle for mares just over 12 months ago.
The Glancing Queen, who won that day, has since made up into a chase and landed a Listed contest at Bangor last time out. Bourbon Beauty, the runner-up, went on to score a Grade 2 mares’ handicap hurdle at Newbury. Even the third home, Global Harmony, has stepped up in trip and won a Hereford handicap. That gives the form a very good look.
Alpha Carinae has since ran third to Dragon Bones over this trip in Listed company at Doncaster. The winner went on to land three of her next four starts and place in a black type race at Kempton last time out. Now back up to 3m, Alpha Carinae has more to offer, especially off a reduced chase mark of 117. A £25 punt on her at her current price returns £81.25.
