Jamie Hamilton, the regular rider of Cilliuirid, has a 25 per cent win ratio at Sedgefield this season thanks to this partnership. The form of their September win over a longer trip has since been advertised by the runner-up. Brother Pat has come out and won his next two starts in style. That one now has an official rating of 120, so Cilluirid’s revised mark of 108 still looks generous.
He races here off 104, so that is 4lb well-in. The way that Cilluirid travelled so strongly over course and distance for an 11-length win shows he was a handicap blot. He looked a cut-above class 5 company, so steps up in grade here. After such an easy victories, connections feel the need to strike while the iron is hot.
It could be a shrewd move from Easterby. Cilluirid is two from four since going over fences, so this sphere has brought clear improvement. Left-handed, sharp but undulating tracks see this horse at his best. JP McManus and Ben Haslam run two against the favourite but under welter burdens here.
