In his 16 years of illustrious career at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard has been involved in so many assists for great Liverpool strikers that one can watch it on Youtube compilations again and again, without getting bored. It includes the back-passes to Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba as well.

However, this season, he has probably delivered the biggest ever assist for Liverpool in his long football career, by stopping Luis Suarez from leaving the club. After missing out on preventing both Michael Owen and Fernando Torres from leaving Anfield in the past, the Liverpool skipper made sure that the Reds’ last recognized world class player must not leave in the summer.

Gerrard revealed last week that he’d prayed Suarez would remain at Anfield after Arsenal lodged two mega bids for the Uruguayan.

Suarez revealed today that he held private conversations with Gerrard and admitted that the legendary skipper was one of the main reasons why he chose to stay put. He said:

“I do not know if he prayed but what he said is what he feels because he was talking to me all the time.

“Gerrard, for me, is a legend in Liverpool and a great team-mate that helped me a lot.

“His attitude was an extra boost for me to take the decision to stay in Liverpool. Both he and the fans of Liverpool influenced much for that. I admire him for the great player he is worldwide.”

“For me he will always be a benchmark and at club level he is the best player I have played with in my career, as a person and as a footballer.”

This season presents probably Liverpool’s best chance to qualify for the Champions League. The Reds have started the season brilliantly sharing the top spot with Arsenal and Suarez is already playing a major part in it. Should they qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season with the maverick star playing a huge role, this little assist from Steven Gerrard could prove to be a huge difference.
