There were plenty of points to be had in round two of the Soccerlens Fantasy Football Game. Not one, not two, but three teams won 6-0, with two players scoring hat-tricks and no less than seven players scoring braces. Unfortunately only two of these men were selected for my team, the Soccerlens All-Stars. Competing at the Silver level, which costs $4.99 to play, I finished joint fifth in my 11 team league. The very definition of mid-table.
Just like last week’s fourth place finish, this isn’t bad. It was enjoyable too. I’m not an Arsenal fan, but I celebrated Andrei Arshavin’s assist to Theo Walcott like a lifelong Gooner, because those things are worth three points. But fun as it was to play, joint fifth was not good enough to win any cash prizes. Congratulations to the manager of the Armanninho team who finished top of our league and won $25, and also to the two joint second placed teams Fighting Dutchmen and Fowler Prowlers, who win $7.50 each.
Here’s a quick look at the big scorers, the men you should have had in your team:
In goal, Steve Harper was your man. Two points for playing 90 minutes in goal for Newcastle against Aston Villa, four points for the clean sheet, and another two points for what is generously being deemed a “penalty save”, for the moment when John Carew got confused while taking his penalty and confused himself with Johnny Wilkinson. Ten points in total for Harper.
In defence, it was all about Gareth Bale. Two goals for Spurs against Stoke, each of them worth five points, even though one was about a thousand times better than the other. With another two points for time on field, that’s 12 points in total for the Welsh wonder. Bale is already a fantasy football favourite, as evidenced by nine of the eleven teams in my league fielding him.
Newcastle’s Kevin Nolan was the big points scorer in midfield. Nolan scored twice for Newcastle against Villa, worth four points each, plus two for playing 90 minutes and a nice little bonus point for Newcastle’s clean sheet. Nolan scored 11 points altogether.
Going forward was tougher to call. Theo Walcott got a hat-trick but no assists. Didier Drogba got a hat-trick of assists but no goals. Either would have done your fantasy football team proud, but Newcastle’s Andy Carroll mixed it up properly, scoring three goals vs Aston Villa, but also assisting for one of Kevin Nolan’s. That’s three points for each goal, another three for the assist, plus another two for time spent on pitch, giving Andy Carroll a full 14 points.
For week three, I’m going to try my luck again at the Silver level of competition in the Soccerlens Fantasy Football Game. It’s $4.99 to play, with $40 of prizes to be won. If I’m more successful next week then I’ll step up to the Gold level ($9.99 to play, $80 to be won) and then beyond that maybe to the Platinum level ($24.99 with $200 up for grabs.) I’m already looking at the Premier League fixture list and wondering which teams will be winning 6-0 next week…
