James Rodriguez was just another good player playing in the Portuguese league couple of years back. His move to Monaco didn’t create much hype in European media as well and it needed a strong platform like the World Cup to prove his true mettle and to get the global recognition, he deserves.

He had an outstanding 2014 FIFA World Cup for Colombia where he bagged six goals and won the Golden Boot award. After his superb performances in the World Cup, he became one of the hottest property in Europe, and as a natural consequence, top European clubs went crazy to sign him at the earliest.

Manchester United were linked with a move for the 23-year-old, but those mainly came from British tabloids. The Express claimed on many occasion over the past one month that he is one of the prime targets of United and that the Old Trafford club are ready to break the bank and their tradition to sign a player, who could cost over €60m. Well, as you can now see, there was hardly any iota of truth in such reports.

It became clear to us that his only possible destination is Real Madrid. Spanish radio station Cadena Ser had reported yesterday that Rodriguez was in Spain to complete his signing. Marca claim today that Madrid have agreed a deal with Monaco for a fee around €75m and the player could be officially presented as early as today.

The Colombian is set to join a six year contract and will earn about €7m per year. He will become the second major signing of the season, after Toni Kroos joined last week from Bayern Munich.
