Sunderland are looking favourites to land Swansea striker Danny Graham and are lining up a £5 million bid for the Englishman in the January transfer window.
The Black Cats are struggling at 14th in the Premier League table and manager Martin O’Neill has felt the need to bolster the squad, especially on the attacking front. The former Aston Villa manager desperately needs a striker to ease the burden of Steven Fletcher.
Sunderland have managed only 21 goals in the league with Fletcher contributing with over one-third of them. The attacking front lacks manpower as Fraizer Campbell – who will be out of contract at the end of the season – is heading to Hull City for a cut-price fee.
Campbell looks set to be reunited with his former manager Steve Bruce, after his father Keith admitted, as quoted in the Daily Mail:
“Fraizer is aware of Steve Bruce saying he is interested in signing him, and he would definitely be interested in going back to Hull.
“He is a big fan of Steve Bruce.”
Therefore, O’Neill feels the need to reinforce immediately and sees Danny Graham as an ideal strike partner for Fletcher.
Graham made his name at Watford where he scored 38 league goals in 91 appearances for the club. He joined Swansea in 2011 for a reported fee of £3.5 million and proved his worth under Brendan Rodgers, scoring 14 goals in all competitions in his debut season.
However, the 27-year-old found his chances limited this term under new manager Michael Laudrup after new signing Michu’s overwhelming impact at the Liberty Stadium.
Several other Premier League clubs like Norwich City, Aston Villa, West Brom, Reading and Southampton have also registered their interest but as it stands, Sunderland are in pole position to take Danny Graham back to the heart of his native North-East.
