Brendan Rodgers expects Daniel Agger to remain at Anfield beyond the current transfer window.
Amid speculation surrounding the future of a number of Liverpool players, most notably Suarez, Skrtel and Downing, retaining the services of Agger should be of a top priority for Rodgers.
Rodgers’ knows he has an excellent defender, “I wouldn’t be surprised [if Barcelona want him] because he is a world class defender.”
He has also explained that when several parties were interested last summer the Dane was keen to point out that if Rodgers wanted him, Liverpool was the only place for him: “And at the time, there were a lot of big clubs looking to sign Daniel. But he gave me his word in that conversation that for as long as I wanted him to be at Liverpool, he would be here, and he has never swayed from that.”
Agger recently signed a long term contract extension, signaling again that he expects to see out a significant part of his career at Liverpool.
“He has a commitment to Liverpool that is so refreshing, his loyalty is impressive. He will always be wanted because he is world class.” says Rodgers.
Liverpool fans certainly appreciate Agger’s qualities and loyalty, something which seems to be lacking in many modern footballers.
The future of Suarez is uncertain, but it looks as though Rodgers has solid foundations in place throughout the squad on which to build an assault of the top for. They are lacking one or two class players and losing Suarez would be a big step back, but so would losing Daniel Agger.
It is expected that Liverpool are in the market for a defender and another attacker, Rodgers will need to move quickly if Suarez leaves, “We need one or two players to cover positions where we are a little short, and we will maybe look to bring in one or two in the attacking areas. The window is still open until the end of this month.”
