Daniel Agger has announced yesterday that he is leaving the Anfield club to join his home town club Brondby this summer. The Denmark skipper joined Liverpool in 2006, signed by then manager Rafael Benitez and has made over 170 league appearances and becoming a fan favourite in the process.
His return to his former club is seen as a major boost for Denmark. Although his transfer has fetched few millions for Brondby (minimal for Liverpool though), Danish economists feel his return could galvanise the Copenhagen outfit.
Sports economist Troels Troelsen, professor at CBS predicts as noted by Danish newspaper BT that Agger would fetch around €30m to Brondby. He is predicting a gain in the sale of shits, with name Agger & no 22 on the back.
He predicts that Brondby can fetch around €20m from shirt sales, although it largely depends on the contract made by the club with the shirt sponsors. Brondby has a tradition to change shit sponsors time to time but they still should fetch anything between €10-€20m.
Brondby with him will become a powerful side again and now are a serious candidate for the Championship. They would reap the TV benefits and a possible Champions League qualification as well, which would fetch huge amount of money.
Furthermore, Agger being a popular figure in Denmark would draw huge crowd pull and therefore it will have a positive impact on Match Day revenues. Around 2000-2500 more people are expected to arrive at the stadium which could fetch anything around €10m more. Thus Brondby could gain up to €30m from various revenue sources. Agger’s return is seen as a major boost for the Danish league as a whole.
