Real Madrid have confirmed the appointment of Rafael Benitez as their new manager on Wednesday.

The former Liverpool boss agreed to join the Spanish capital club on a three-year deal and he will be unveiled on 3 June.

“Real Madrid CF today presented Wednesday, June 3, Rafa Benitez as the new coach of the first team for the next three seasons. The event will take place at 13:00 pm in the Royal Box Bernabeu. Then Rafa Benitez will appear before the media in the press room,” a statement read on Real’s official website.

Florentino Pérez sacked Carlo Ancelotti after the Italian manager failed to win the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey in his second season. The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss helped Real win the La Decima, their 10th European championship during the 2013-14 season.

Despite finished second to league winners Barcelona and losing to Juventus in the Champions League semfinal, Real showed the exit door to Ancelotti and replaced him with Benitez.

The Spanish manager’s priority will be to keep hold of his star players as there are concerns surrounding the futures of Iker Casillas and Gareth Bale. The goalkeeper’s future is the air as Real wants to bring in Manchester United keeper David De Gea.

However, United will not let their star player leave, until the La Liga giants allow Bale to move in the opposite direction. Summer signings will be a priority for Benitez and he will be hoping to deliver in his debut season, in order to avoid a similar fate to that of his predecessors.
