Inter Milan manager Walter Mazzarri has expressed hopes that star midfielder Fredy Guarin do not jump ship and stick with the Nerazzurri to turn around a season which is not going well for the club.

Speaking to RAI Sport after Inter’s loss at the hands of Udinese in the Coppa Italia, the under-pressure ex Napoli boss stressed “I’d like Guarin to stay – that’s only normal.”

The 27-year old Colombian international Guarin is in his second season with Inter and his displays in the Inter midfield plus his successful stint in Porto have prompted top clubs like Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona to look towards Guarin as a potential signing in the January window.

Guarin’s strength in marshaling the Central Midfield will be of particular interest to Chelsea as the club is somewhat short (by its own standards) on resources in that area – which is not going to be helped by Frank Lampard’s age and the dip in form of Michael Essien. Guarin bossed the Porto midfield and contributed 5 goals in the successful Europa League campaign of 2010-11 under Andre Villas Boas’ managerial regime.

Add to that Inter’s fall from their days of ruthless Serie A domination, and suddenly the biggest clubs in Europe have a potential master class signing dangling in front of them.

The Inter manager Mazzarri perhaps summed up his helplessness when he said “But if Inter are considering selling him then that must be due to the club’s situation. There are eight players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.” As the window starts ticking away, it is more a question of when rather than if Fredy Guarin is changing club.
