Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is determined to address his side’s failings so far this season and has already prepared a list of targets for the January transfer window.
Despite signing a left back in the summer, Mourinho is keen to add more depth and quality to his full back positions.
The Portuguese manager is set to raid Serie A for another left back in the form of Jose Luis Gaya. The Valencia defender has been turning heads across Europe with outstanding displays since last season and Mourinho is keen to acquire his services.
The 20 year old Spanish full back had a sensational season with Valencia last year and was offered a new long term deal to ward off interest from Real Madrid in the summer.
However, Mourinho is indifferent towards Valencia’s demands and wants to sign Gaya in January.
Chelsea have made a disastrous start to the season and amongst other positions on the pitch, Mourinho has particularly struggled with his full backs. Ivanovic has been poor since the start of the season and the usually reliable Azpilicueta also looks suspect at left back.
Chelsea signed the Augsburg left back, Baba Rahman this summer. However, Mourinho knows that the African youngster will need more time to adapt and is keen to secure an established left back.
Gaya is one of the best young left backs in the world and will certainly improve Chelsea. But it is important to remember that Valencia are in a strong financial position and do not need to sell their prized asset.
It is further unlikely that the Spanish outfit will agree to a sale in the middle of the season. Although the Spain U21 star has a release clause, his transfer to Chelsea might just have to wait till summer.
Manchester City and Real Madrid are tracking the 20 year old left back as well.
