Jose Mourinho recently claimed in press that Chelsea are not looking to sign Roma defender Mehdi Benatia. He insisted that the club has enough defensive resources and therefore are not looking to sign any more central defenders.

He said: “No. We are not interested. We have (John) Terry, (Gary) Cahill, (Branislav) Ivanovic and (Kurt) Zouma…we are fine.”

Benatia himself has told Roma fans at Roma’s summer training camp to “relax” and that he is “staying put.”

The Moroccan has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea through the summer and despite Mourinho’s comments it seems like the rumour mill is not going to stop anytime soon.

According to popular Italian sport journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the chances of Benatia leaving the club and joining Roma is very much on the cards.

He claims that Sporting director of Roma, Walter Sabatini is expected to be in London this weekend, where we would be watching the match between West Ham and Tottenham.

Although his primary intention is to do a business for Mattia Destro but would continue talking with Chelsea over any possible deal for Benatia.

Benatia has played 33 times in Seria A for Roma last season, where he bagged 5 goals. He joined from Udinese in July 2013 for €13.5 million (£10.8 million). Now a year on, he’s valued at approximately £30-33 million.

Roma coach Rudi Garcia claimed recently that he was 99% certain that Benatia would stay with the Giallorossi. Pedulla has done some great scoops over the last couple of years, but think he is wrong with his info here.
