Premier League champions Chelsea had tried to sign Paris Saint Germain defender Marquinhos in the summer, but their bid was rejected, if the reports from France to be believed.
Chelsea failed to bolster their defence in the summer after missing out on signing John Stones. The Blues ended up singing Papy Djilobodji on the transfer deadline day.
According to French outlet Le 10 Sport, Chelsea had a €42m bid for Marquinhos rejected, but the 21-year-old is reportedly angling a move away from the Parc des Princes, after getting frustrated with lack of game time.
Marquinhos has struggled to get regular games this season, having played only nine minutes after four Ligue 1 fixture this season.
Jean-Michel Larqué, one of France’s most recognized sports journalists and commentators, gave his opinion on the subject, relayed by Le10 Sport (h/t Sport Witness)
He said: “If I were him, I’d be completely sick of the situation. Every game, each and every one of them, he has been good or even great.”
This news would come as a boost for Chelsea, who could be looking to lure the “unsettled” defender away from PSG in the January transfer window or next summer.
Marquinhos would be a fine addition to the Chelsea squad. He is a versatile defender who can also play on the right back. Keeping in mind, the gradual decline of Branislav Ivanovic and skipper John Terry entering the apogee of his career, a move for him makes sense. Although, Everton’s John Stones still remains Chelsea’s prime target next summer.
Manchester United were also thought to be reportedly interested in Marquinhos, with British press constantly had linked him with a move to Old Trafford.
German winger Julian Draxler has joined Wolfsburg this summer as a like-for-like replacement of Kevin de Bruyne, who returned to the Premier League with Manchester City.
Surprisingly, no Premier League clubs made an attempt to sign the winger, while Draxler was reluctant to move abroad to join Italian giants Juventus.
In an interview with Kicker, Draxler was asked whether if regretted refusing offers from Chelsea and Real Madrid, of which he replied “No”.
Draxler is a highly talented young player but he has a massive job in hand to fill up the boots left by De Bruyne at Wolfsburg.
