Good news for Chelsea fans! The Blues are set to open talks with versatile defender Branislav Ivanovic over a new four-and-a-half-year contract.
According to the Daily Mail, the 30-year-old, who has two years left on his current deal, will be offered improved terms on his £120,000 a week salary.
It has been reported recently that European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid were interested in Ivanovic, who has become one of Jose Mourinho’s most trusted players at Chelsea.
The Serbian moved to Stamford Bridge in 2008 from Russian outfit Lokomotiv Moscow, and it took a while for him to really cement his position in the side.
Overlooked by former boss Avram Grant, Ivanovic didn’t make a first team appearance until eight months into his Chelsea career, but since then his has not looked back.
Now under Mourinho, he is the first choice right-back at the club and a firm fan favourite. Moreover, his experience can certainly aid the growth of the younger defenders at the club.
The Mail suggest that Ivanovic is equally keen to extend his stay with the Blues willing to put him in the same wage bracket as the likes of club legends John Terry and Frank Lampard.
Do you think it is a good move taken by the club? Does Ivanovic deserve a lucrative wage to match the likes of Terry and Lampard? Let me know your thoughts below…
