According to transfer gurus ‘Tuttomercatoweb.com’, Chelsea are inching ever closer to the capture of Southampton’s young left-back Luke Shaw.
Shaw, 18, has been one of the breakthrough stars this campaign, and has earned rave reviews from fans and pundits alike. His performances have attracted the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool in recent weeks, but according to this latest report, the defender’s most likely destination is Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea stalwart Ashley Cole has fallen out of favour this season, with right back Cesar Azpilicueta filling in for the 33-year-old throughout the campaign. Shaw is seen as Cole’s natural successor for the England national side, and Jose Mourinho is said to want to bring in the youngster to replace the veteran in West London too.
The Italian report states that, with Shaw being a boyhood Chelsea fan, the 18-year-old is set to join the Blues this summer, with Jose Mourinho holding off on a January bid so as to ensure that the defender is the right man for the job.
Shaw is vying with Cole and Everton’s Leighton Baines for a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad, but with Baines considered to be first choice due to Cole’s lack of game time for Chelsea, the fight seems to just be between the Chelsea defender and the man set to end his career at the highest level.
The price for the defender is rumoured to be around the £21m mark.
What do you think? Can Shaw replace Cole? Should he make a move this summer? Let me know in the comments below…
