Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Manchester United for investing heavily in signing Luke Shaw.
The England international arrived at Old Trafford from Southampton in June as he became the Red Devils’ second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of Ander Herrera.
According to BBC, United paid the South-coast club £27m for the teenager’s signature. The Blues were also in the race for Shaw, but ended up signing Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid. However, the former Real Madrid manager believes Chelsea could not have afforded the hefty price tag slapped by Southampton for Shaw.
Mourinho says the addition of Shaw to Chelsea squad would have created a financial imbalance at Stamford Bridge.
“To pay a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, for Luke Shaw, we are dead. We would have killed our stability with financial fair play, and killed the stability in our dressing room,” Mourinho said.
“Because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid – a good player, fantastic player – but when you pay that amount of money, the next day we would have had players knocking on our door.”
“They would have been saying ‘How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get? It would’ve killed immediately our balance, and we couldn’t allow that,” Chelsea manager added.
Shaw, 19, still has a very long future despite spending two years in top flight English football. The left-back can go on to become a long-term player for the Red Devils, replacing Old Trafford favourite Patrice Evra in the squad.
The French international recently completed his switch to Juventus, despite signing a new one-year deal with United.
