Jose Mourinho has hinted he could join PSG in the future after snubbing them on two occasions previously while he was boss of Real Madrid.
The Portuguese, who is preparing to face the French side in tonight’s last 16 tie of the Champions League with Chelsea, revealed he even met with the mega-rich Qatari family who own PSG.
But despite being tempted by their vision of dominating France and then Europe by acquiring some of the best talent around, Mourinho felt he could not accept the challenge as he had other goals he wanted to achieve first.
“I know the PSG project well, I know it well because when they started this project with the owner, the president and Leonardo, I was to be the coach,” Mourinho admitted.
“I met them in Qatar. The project was to start dominating in France, then Europe. The domination in France is there, they are champions, champions, champions.
“They know they are going to be champions. They know other teams will not resist and that they can even lose a few matches. But I didn’t go because I was at Real Madrid and it was a real ambition for me to be a champion in Spain, England and Italy. It was not the right moment for me to go.”
Mourinho, therefore it would seem, is not closing the door on linking up with PSG in the future. But for now his focus is on Chelsea and trying to make more history by securing a Premier League and Champions League double – a notoriously difficult feat, especially for Premier League sides.
“For an English team it’s more difficult than other teams,” he continued. “You can see it. The last two English teams to win the Champions League finished fifth and sixth. Chelsea and Liverpool.
“Chelsea finished 25 points behind the champions and stopped playing for the title around November or December, because a team that is playing in this country to win every game, to try to be champions and to be top of the league and competing top one, top two, minimum top three, is a completely different profile.
“It’s a big achievement for any English club to do that, not just for us. It’s a big achievement to win the Premier League for any club. Imagine in the modern Champions League and Premier League, imagine the team to do the double.”
While Mourinho appears to suggest it is an almost impossible task that would represent further history-making on his behalf if he pulls it off, he also seems to have forgotten that Manchester United actually achieved what he so clearly craves in 2008 – having beaten Chelsea on penalties – and in 1999 with the legendary treble winning side.
