Barcelona vs Napoli preview
Barcelona made it to the Europa League last 16 after being eliminated from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 17 years. The Catalan giants finished third in Group E.
A team used to fighting for major honors on all fronts, the Europa League is now this transitional Barcelona side’s last remaining hope for silverware. Xavi Hernandez’s team is miles off the pace in La Liga, some 15 points behind Real Madrid in the table, and has already been eliminated from the Copa del Rey.
Xavi and co. head into a tough test against Napoli in rather inconsistent form. Barca have won two, drawn two, and lost two of the last six games played in all competitions and haven’t faired much better at the Camp Nou in European competition this season either, winning one, drawing one, and losing one of their UCL games in Catalonia – again, inconsistent.
That said, Barcelona do have a top record against Napoli at least. In 2020, the Catalan side beat their Italian counterparts in the UCL last-16 stage, winning 4-2 on aggregate over two legs. Barca drew 1-1 away in Italy before winning the reverse fixture 3-1 at the Nou Camp. Historically, Barcelona have also won four of the most recent six games played against Napoli, while there has been a draw and one win for the Italian side.
Napoli began life in this year’s tournament back in Europa League Group C, where they qualified in second place behind Spartak Moscow after amassing 10 points from six games.
In Serie A, Luciano Spalletti’s team has fared well to date. After drawing 1-1 against Internazionale at the weekend, Napoli are third in the table and just two points behind AC Milan in top spot.
One worry for fans in Naples, however, will be their club’s poor run of form away in European knockout fixtures in recent years. Napoli have lost four successive games on the continent.
Still, with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen averaging a goal every 42 minutes in the Europa League this season, and factoring in Barcelona’s inconsistent form of late, Napoli have every chance of emerging from the Camp Nou with a result if they are at their best.
Regardless of the outcome, follow the action LIVE at bet365.
