Barcelona were eliminated from the Group E of the UEFA Champions League and find themselves in the Europa League knockout round for the first time in 17 years.
Xavi Hernandez’s side have also been knocked out of the Copa del Rey and are lagging some 15 points behind fierce rivals Real Madrid in La Liga. So, like it or not, the Europa League is now the Catalan giant’s best chance of a trophy this year.
The club’s recent form hasn’t been great, however. Xavi Hernandez brought in an array of stars during the January transfer window, including Adama Traore, Dani Alves, and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang. But, whilst Barca fans wait for their star-studded lineup to gel, results have been hit and miss.
In the last six games played in all comps, Barca have won two, drawn two, and lost two games, and the side’s form at the Camp Nou in European competition hasn’t been much better either, where Barca have won once, drawn once, and lost once.
Barcelona do, however, have a great recent record vs Napoli, most recently winning 4-2 on aggregate over two legs in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League. On top of that, Barcelona have also won four of the last six fixtures played against Napoli, while there has been a draw and one win for Thursday night’s visitors.
Napoli qualified for the knockout rounds after finishing up in second place in Europa League Group C, taking 10 points from six games and finishing just behind Spartak Moscow in the league standings.
Luciano Spalletti’s side is also going well in Serie A this year. A draw against Internazionale on Saturday helped Napoli to third place in the table; just two points behind AC Milan in first place.
Keep an eye out, too, for Napoli center forward, Victor Osimhen, who was scoring goals at some rate in the Europe League group stage. The Nigerian averages a goal every 42 minutes in the competition and could be worth a punt on the player prop market given Barca’s shaky defending this season.
With all that said, however, one statistic that does trouble is in terms of a bet on the form side (in this case, Napoli) is that, in recent history, fans in Naples haven’t enjoyed much success either against Barcelona or in the away legs of European knockout competition.
Napoli have lost four successive games in the knockout phases of the UCL and Europa Leage and, as mentioned, have only won once in six attempts vs Barcelona.
