Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of putting together a team capable of challenging on all fronts under manager Andre Villas-Boas, even if they lose their crown jewel Gareth Bale this summer. In fact they could make a great team that is capable of not only challenging for the Champions League spot, but could have an outside shot at the Premier League title as well.
As per latest report from BBC, talks have been going on at an advanced stage between both Spurs and Real Madrid regarding the transfer of Bale. And, if all things go well, Bale could wear the prestigious no 11 of Madrid before the end of the transfer window. Tottenham fans knew deep down that it is hard for any player to reject advances of Real Madrid, especially if that is a world-record offer.
Last season, they were so close to getting into the top four. The gap between them and fourth placed Arsenal weren’t much and at this point of writing, one can say with conviction that on paper, they have improved their squad a lot better than their North London rivals.
They have broken their previous transfer records twice this summer to bring in potential superstars like Paulinho and Roberto Soldado. Further, they have added two very good players with solid technical abilities in Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue. With Bale still here, this is already a fantastic team. There is not only sufficient depth in the squad but the first team has been bolstered as well.
The thing is, without the Premier League’s buccaneering darling, Spurs would look more dangerous than others could care to believe. As per the reports, Spurs could get one of the world’s finest full-backs in Fabio Coentrao from Real Madrid as a part of the Bale deal. A player of his caliber will add an extra dimension to the squad.
But, the two mega-deals that Spurs are looking to make using Bale’s money strike fear in the opposition’s heart – Willian and Erik Lamela.
Regular followers of Champions League and European football will have an idea of the qualities of the Brazilian playmaker. Doubts will linger because Willian hasn’t played in a top European league, but some of his performances for Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League were nothing short of exceptional. Paying big bucks for him is a risk worth taking.
Lamela is already a star. The youngster from Roma has had a terrific last season. He is an outstandingly talented player, who is versatile in truest sense. He can play as forward but he is mainly an attacking midfielder, who can play at the right, left and centre. And he is just 21 and is progressing at an alarming rate. The Argentine has already been a regular member in the national team, while he has been considered as a crucial part of their squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
This summer, if anything, has proved that although White Hart Lane seems destined to miss out on the moments of magic from their Welsh wizard next season, life after Bale looks bright under the able watch of Villas-Boas.
