Arsenal manager Unai Emery has spoken out about the conversation that he shared with Jack Wilshere before the star eventually departed the Emirates.

Wilshere reportedly had hoped to continue playing for his boyhood club and was even prepared to take a pay-cut in order to do so. However, after it became certain that he would not be assured of regular first-team action under Emery, it was decided that the best way forward would be for him to move on.

Arsenal fans have been mixed about the news. Some feel that Wilshere should have been given a life-line as he is still one of the most destructive players in the Premier League when on form. Others feel that it was the right decision as his performances were inconsistent last season as well as due to his injury struggles over the years.

Wilshere has since joined Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham.

“The conversation was a good conversation,” said Emery according to Sky Sports.

“I explained to him my position and how I wanted the team to stand. I could not say for sure that he was in the first eleven. He told me that this decision was not easy for him and that he wanted to choose the best option for himself.

“It was respectful. I know this player is important to the fans. But I do not give him a permanent place.

“That’s why he decided to leave and I respect that.”
