Alberto Aquilani, one of the failed transfers of Rafael Benitez is now set to leave Liverpool on loan, after spending his most of the first season at Anfield on the sidelines. He was not included in the squad for Liverpool first leg against Trabzonspor. Instead, Christian Poulsen made his first appearance for the Reds. Aquilani, 26, who was signed from Roma last season for a reported 20 million pounds, was plagued with injuries and made only 27 appearances for Liverpool. Roy Hodgson is currently is not in need for his services and admits that he would be better of playing for a team where he can start every week.
“At the moment we are considering possibly loaning him to an Italian club, but nothing is sure about that yet so I don’t have anything definite to report. I didn’t want to use him (against Trabzonspor) just in case the loan goes through, because for Aquilani this year it’s very important that he plays regular football, every week, as the number one man on the teamsheet” says RH, despite saying that he was in need of his services and that Aquilani was one of the best long passers in the Premier League.
However, it doesn’t seem that he is looking to sell Aquilani. A loan appears to be the best option for the player. With the Liverpool midfield having new faces including Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen, Roy Hodgson is clear is stating that Aquilani is not a part of his plans this season. Right now, it is not clear where Aquilani could be heading. Rumors suggest that Juventus might be interested in him. In the following week, it will be confirmed whether Alberto manages to sign a loan deal as the Transfer Season is in its closing stages.
“I can’t promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties. It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year.”
