American star Landon Donovan interested in Everton return

American star Landon Donovan has stated his desire to return to Everton after last season’s successful loan spell with the Toffees.

The 28-year-old forward spent two months on loan at Everton in the latter half of last season, and he enjoyed a highly successful spell. He made 13 appearances (10 starts – seven in the Premier League), and he scored two goals and assisted on three others. It was by far his most successful foray into European football after forgettable stints in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.

Everton were interested in extending Donovan’s loan stint, but he had to return to the L.A. Galaxy. He’s continued where he left off at Everton, notching three goals and 11 assists in only 12 league appearances for Bruce Arena’s side, helping the Galaxy run out to the best record in the Major League Soccer a little more than halfway through the season. He also carried that fine form into the World Cup, scoring three goals in four games, including a memorable late winner against Algeria to send the United States into the round of 16, where they fell in extra time to Ghana.

It’s highly unlikely that MLS will be looking to do business in the summer, but Donovan remains hopeful that something could come to pass over the next month.

“I would love to go back to Everton. I love the people there and I love the fans there.”

“But that said, I love being in America too, so we are going to take everything into account and see where it ends up.

“Anything is possible at this stage and I’m going to make the decision that’s best for me. We hear little bits and pieces here and there and there have certainly been clubs that are interested, but right now, it’s only preliminary.

“There’s still a lot of time left in the transfer window, so we’ll see what moves are made and, if it’s serious, then we’ll treat it seriously.”
