Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wanted defender Glen Johnson to stay at the club, but with every passing day it seems like the England international will not accept a bit-part role rather wants to play regularly elsewhere.
His contract expires at the end of the season and the former Chelsea defender is weighing up options, as he prepares to leave Anfield.
Serie A giants Roma are thought to be one of the interested clubs, and Johnson’s agent says the defender prefers a move too, but the problem is, there hasn’t been any contact yet with the Italian outfit.
Speaking to Roma Press, via Liverpool Echo, agent Jonathan Barnett said: “There hasn’t been any (contact with Roma) at the moment.
“He’s obviously looking for things at the moment. He’s looking at many clubs.
“Glen is obviously looking for somewhere where he can turn around his career. That’s the most important thing for him.
“Where he can play nicely under a good club that’s challenging for things. That is where he wants to be.
“At the moment there isn’t a time frame.
“We’ve had no contact with Roma, although Roma would be a lovely place for him – Ashley Cole absolutely adores it there, I represent him as well.
“Ashley thinks very highly of Rome but we’ve had no contact with Roma regarding Glen.”
Johnson earns a reported fee of around £120,000 per week and has rejected Liverpool’s offer of a short extension on reduced terms already.
If anything the second half of the season has proved, Johnson’s career at Liverpool is coming to an end. Rodgers’ new system doesn’t favour out an out right wing back, as a result he has dropped down the pecking orders.
Rodgers has said recently that young Jon Flanagan, right back emerging from the club’s youth academy, has a bright future at the club, and will be given a new contract in coming months.
