Liverpool must bring back club-hero Xabi Alonso in the January Transfer window. According to latest reports from The Metro, the Reds boss has been given a green signal to go for the pass-master of Real Madrid, who is in his final year of his contract and an extension is looking unlikely.
Here are six reasons why Alonso should be signed in January:
World-Class
At 31, Alonso has plenty to offer to any football club. Simply because, he is world class and to be honest he is still better than a lot of midfielders in the Premier League. Secondly who doesn’t want to add a quality player to the ranks. No wonder, why Chelsea and Juventus are so eager to land him.
Unfinished business at Liverpool
Alonso left Liverpool in 2009, after enjoying a successful career at Anfield. But, time and again, he has expressed his love for this club and its fans. Having won almost everything in his life – World Cup, Champions League, League title – he should now return to his second home and help Liverpool reclaim its glory days again.
Available for Cheap
Real Madrid will be willing to do any business with the Reds for around £3million. Rodgers has stated before that Liverpool will do not any compromise with quality, and age won’t come as a deciding factor for that. The burning example is Kolo Toure. Liverpool can easily pay that price for one of the best playmakers of this generation.
Liverpool need him
Rodgers’ philosophy of death-by-football can be executed only to perfection if right players are available. The art of ball retention, spreading passes from deep midfield (a la Pirlo, Xavi) and controlling the tempo of the game are some of the qualities required to execute such system. With Joe Allen yet to play any significant role, Rodgers can give Steven Gerrard more license to go forward (preferably in the hole) by playing Alonso and Lucas in the middle.
Could have a major impact in Jan
Liverpool have started the season brilliantly and will be pushing hard to qualify for the top four spot. Last season we have seen how January signings have reshaped Liverpool’s fortune and Alonso might have similar impact too. He would change the atmosphere in the camp – the perfect dose the Reds would need to reach the doors of Champions League.
Experience
Alonso would bring his wealth of experience to this Liverpool side. The young blood that forms the base of Rodgers’ team would get to learn a lot from him while his addition would bring a perfect blend of youth and experience to the side.
