With now officially less than a week remaining in the January transfer window, things are starting to gather pace, with the Premier League heavyweights starting to flex their muscles.
In the face of adversity and recent mediocrity, Manchester United have tried to reverse the tide with the signing of Chelsea’s immensely gifted playmaker Juan Mata – but it appears that David Moyes’ men are not finished there.
The Mirror has this morning claimed that the Premier League champions have made a £22.5 million offer for Southampton prodigy Luke Shaw, who is also in Chelsea’s crosshairs.
The Old Trafford outfit are in the market for a new left-back, with Patrice Evra’s time at the club seemingly coming to an end. Despite prolonged links to Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao, it may well be Shaw that fills the boots of the ageing Frenchman in the long term.
The St Mary’s youth team graduate is widely acknowledged as one of the most promising young players in English football, and has been starring for the overachieving Saints this term.
The future England international is seemingly set to be the subject of a transfer tug-of-war in the last week of the window, with two of the Premier League’s top teams ready to battle it out for his signature.
Chelsea are believed to have already made an offer for the talented defender, thought to be in the £21 million region, which Mauricio Pochettino’s men are weighing up.
However, with United trumping the offer, a financial tussle may well be ready to ensue.
Shaw signed a new contract back in July, but with his ever-improving performances and consistent form, it appears that it will only be a matter of time before Southampton have to part with their prize asset under pressure from the big boys.
For United, to land both Shaw and Mata in the transfer window would be quite the statement and solve two problem areas for David Moyes.
There looks set to be a couple of twists in this transfer pursuit, but it seems that Shaw could well sign for one of English football’s top sides in the next week.
