England v France
Wednesday 17 November
Fabio Capello has announced an experimental / fresh-looking squad to play France on Wednesday at Wembley which is bound to ruffle a few feathers, although at this point anything Capello does provokes a mini-lynching from sections of the press.
Fabio Capello on Andy Carroll:
“He is young. He is 21 and just started to play last season. This season he has exploded. Now he is on fire. But if you speak with the players, he is one for the future for England. He is a really good player, good in the air, he has good movement without the ball, he can find space. Technically he is good and he is also a fighter. But he is mostly interesting for the future. I have three players – [Kevin] Davies, [Peter] Crouch and Carroll – who are all the same type. They cannot play together. I have to find a solution.”
“It is very important for him to stay in the seniors, because we have a lot of important players who can stay with him and speak with him about the area outside the pitch. I hope his private life will improve.”
Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson, Cardiff’s Jay Bothroyd – who would be the first Championship player since David Nugent in 2007 to be capped – and Manchester United’s Chris Smalling have also earned their first call-ups.
In total, there are nine new faces from the squad Capello announced for last month’s Euro 2012 qualifier, including Micah Richards, who has never played a game under the Italian.
