After a fair few weeks of intense will he/won’t he speculation, Liverpool have confirmed that they have appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager.
The 62-year-old, who was voted the LMA ‘Manager of the Year’ last term by a jury of his peers, has signed a three-year deal at Anfield and will oversee the club’s first day of pre-season later today before being officially unveiled to the media this evening.
Hodgson told the club’s official website;
“This is the biggest job in club football and I’m honoured to be taking on Britain’s most successful football club.”
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has greeted the appointment of the former Fulham boss, stating that he is sure that the club have installed ‘the right man’ at the helm;
“The club have made a good appointment in Roy Hodgson.
Rafa [Benitez] left a few weeks ago and I know the club were determined to take their time and get the right man for the job.
Roy is hugely experienced and I believe he is the right man for Liverpool. I think it’s been worth the wait and I’m sure he’s just keen now to get on with it and start to quickly put in place his plans for the new season.”
Stalwart centre-back Jamie Carragher echoed his skipper’s sentiments;
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of working with Roy Hodgson as he’s got such a great reputation in the game and is one of the most experienced managers in world football. After this period of uncertainty, his appointment has given us all a lift.”
The Anfield board will now be hoping that Hodgson will be able to apply his vast managerial experience to the task of resurrecting the fortunes of one of European football’s most high-profile ‘fallen giants’ – on a shoestring budget.
Fulham have placed assistant manager Ray Lewington in temporary charge as the begin their search for Hodgson’s replacement.
