According to the Daily Mail, Inter Milan could make a move for Newcastle’s Michael Owen as a short-term solution to their need for a new striker.
Jose Mourinho has been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Didier Drogba, but with Drogba unavailable until the summer, Owen has emerged as a possible fallback option.
Owen’s contract at Newcastle runs out in the summer, and even though he’s been offered a new deal, he’s delaying a decision on his future until the end of the season. The uncertainty about his future has increased speculation that Newcastle could sell him in January to get something for him instead of losing him for nothing in the summer.
If these reports do materialize, Inter could not only part with some cash, but they could also send Honduran striker David Suazo to Newcastle. Suazo is currently on loan at Benfica, where he has scored five goals in nine appearances.
The inclusion of Suazo in the deal could persuade Newcastle to make the deal happen. Suazo scored 22 Serie A goals in the 2005/06 with Cagliari and followed it up with 14 more in the 2006/07 season before scoring eight as a part-time starter last season in his first campaign with Inter, so even though he’s not in Jose Mourinho’s plans in Milan, he’s proven at the highest levels, and he could be an impact man for the Magpies.
Considering that any move for Drogba could relegate Owen to being a bit-part player next season and beyond, he may not be particularly interested in a move to Inter, even though he’d get Champions League football and a chance to be a part of another Serie A title for Inter.
Would it make sense for Owen to move to Inter? Do you think he could make an impact for the Nerazzurri?
