Yes, you read it right. According to German newspaper Bild, Mario Gotze has decided to leave Bayern Munich this summer and the two clubs who are leading the race for his signature are Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur.
Gotze has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool as well. The player revealed back in March that he was still in contact with the Reds manager Jurgen Klopp. However, it seems, Liverpool weren’t too keen to pay around £37m (the fee quoted in the media) for Gotze and have moved on since with the signing of Sadio Mane from Southampton.
The rough translation from the Bild article suggests that Gotze has told his friends / some people in the national team that he will leave Munich this summer. He has set his mind on that. The question is where will he go? There is an option of him returning to Borussia Dortmund (can’t rule out especially after the departure of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Manchester United), but a move to Premier League is more likely. In the last few days, Tottenham has been in contact with the player.
Gotze didn’t enjoy a great 2015/16 campaign for Bayern although injury restricted his game time to a major extent. He is 24 and a potential world class player. His contract at Bayern expires in 2017 and he has been refusing to sign a new deal for a while. There is also a suggestion that Carlo Ancelotti is ready to cut bait on him and cash in on him instead of letting him go on a free next summer.
To be honest, you don’t sell a player like Gotze on a free. Gotze is a kind of player who will take your club to the next level, and certainly he can take Spurs to an elite level. Plus, Spurs are in the hunt of an attacking midfield and Gotze fits all the bills.
Bild, however, doesn’t elaborate on the link. They just claim Spurs have been in contact with the player, which probably means the club has made an initial contact with his agent. There is no such indication that the player wants to join the London club or maybe fancy a return to Dortmund but at the same time, it doesn’t look like a trash report coming out from English tabloids.
Given a chance, Spurs should make a concrete effort to sign him this summer. The North London outfit will play in the Champions League in 2016/17 and they can certainly afford to give him the wage (obviously, would be on the higher side) he earns at Bayern.
