Manchester United have confirmed Rui Faria will be the Red Devils’ assistant manager after revealing that six new additions were made to Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff at Old Trafford on Thursday.
The Portuguese tactician was appointed as United manager in May, following the sacking of Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman was relieved from his duties just days after he guided the Premier League giants to the FA Cup triumph in May.
After Van Gaal’s departure, his backroom staff were also allowed to leave, apart from Ryan Giggs. The Welshman’s future was also resolved earlier this month as he left United after spending 29 years at the club.
Mourinho revealed that Giggs wanted to be United manager in his first press-conference. However, the club decided against appointing him as their manager and Mourinho wanted to bring his own backroom staff to Old Trafford.
“Jose Mourinho was officially unveiled as Manchester United manager on Tuesday and the club is now delighted to confirm his backroom staff,” a statement read on United’s official website.
“Six newcomers will join Mourinho in working with the first team and the existing specialist departments at the Aon Training Complex. The new arrivals are assistant manager Rui Faria, coaches Silvino Louro, Ricardo Formosinho, Carlos Lalin and Emilio Alvarez plus analyst Giovanni Cerra,” it added.

Faria first met Mourinho during the latter’s time at Barcelona and then he was the 53-year-old’s fitness coach at Uniao de Leiria in Portugal. Since then, Faria has been by Mourinho’s side at every club he has managed.
Silvino Louro will be the new goalkeeping coach at Old Trafford, replacing Frans Hoek. Louro was part of Moruinho’s coaching staff since his time at FC Porto and has followed him at Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
Faria and Louro will be joined by Ricardo Formosinho, Carlos Lalin and Emilio Alvarez, along with Giovanni Cerra at United.
