The under fire Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has been offered a potential exit route from Old Trafford, in the form of a Technical Director like role with the Netherlands football team.
Van Gaal’s United are winless in their last 8 games, a low that the club had seen last in 1990. On this backdrop, to a large section of the clubs’ fan-base, Van Gaal’s position as manager is no longer tenable.
The manager has also indicated that his days in the hot seat are numbered when he said it is beyond him to revive the fortunes of the squad, although he said after the Chelsea game that intends to stay on.
Dutch media have reported that should Van Gaal choose to exit his current role, Danny Blind, the incumbent Netherlands manager would want him in a Director role.
After Van Gaal took the Dutch to the semifinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and left for United, the performance graph of the team has gone downhill with Netherlands failing to qualify for the 2016 Euro.
At this stage, Danny Blind would want a proven success like Van Gaal to mentor the embattled squad.
Blind told Algemeen Dagblad: “With Van Gaal I could achieve a lot. He is in the top category. But there are also many other options to think of where the shoe could fit. I do not know if that will happen.
“I recently read a comment by Bert van Oostveen [KNVB director of professional football] about [appointing a technical director]. But I have not spoken to him about it personally.”
As far as graceful exits go, this might be the one Van Gaal find to his liking. The result of the game against Swansea this Saturday might provide the final resolution to the Van Gaal situation, one way or the other.
