Javier Hernandez has admitted that he had no intention of leaving Manchester United and was forced to quit Red Devils after their manager Louis van Gaal informed him he had only one percent chance of playing for the English giants.
Once the Dutchman took the reigns at Old Trafford, the Mexican international dropped down the pecking order and was informed he would have to fight for a place at the club. There was an option to leave on loan and he joined Real Madrid on a season-long loan last term.
On his return to United, Hernandez did not see any change in the situation, despite the exit of Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie. Lack of assurances of playing time saw him leave Red Devils and join Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
“I didn’t have the intention to leave but I wanted to more playing time,” the striker told Spanish television show Fiebre Maldini via IBTimes UK.
“Van Gaal told me that he already had his strikers, that I would have to fight for a place but could take an offer if an opportunity arrives. The board told me that I could go on loan to Real Madrid and it was not a difficult decision for me.”
“Then I returned to Manchester. I started to have opportunities but one day I spoke with Van Gaal and I had only a 1% chance of playing so I needed to make magic. So I moved Bayer,” he admitted. “I have been confident since the first day and I feel important here, not only for the goals but in all the games I watch, I see myself in the line-up.”
Since moving to Germany, Hernandez has scored 17 goals in all competitions, which includes 10 goals in the league from 13 appearances. On the other hand, United have struggled to find the back of the net, with Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney as the recognised strikers in the squad after allowing James Wilson leave on loan.
The England international has struggled to find the back of the net, while Martial is adapting to his new life in the Premier League.
