Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor is understood to be earning £100,000-per-week without playing, according to Daily Mail. The former Arsenal and Real Madrid hitman is on Tottenham Hotspur’s wage bill and will pocket a total of £5.25m by the time his contract expires on June 30 2016.
Adebayor is unattached since September, but will continue receiving payments from Spurs if he doesn’t join another club. He last played for Spurs at Manchester United in March this year. It is believed the striker is also being paid by Manchester City, who sold him to Spurs in a deal that forced the player to take a pay cut.
The deal which took him to Spurs had an agreement that City would remunerate Adebayor for the £75,000-per-week wage cut he took, which means he will have earned more than £5m by the time his Spurs contract ends from clubs he no longer plays for. That is a significant amount for someone who hasn’t kicked a ball this season.
Man City claim the striker was paid a final settlement last year and insist the settlement figures are significantly lower than what is being reported.
Adebayor had the chance to move to West Ham United on transfer deadline day, but refused to move as Spurs did not comply to his £5m demand. Spurs were willing to pay a part of his wages but the striker chose not to join West Ham. He has since been seen enjoying his downtime in Togo and Ghana, happily picking up his wages for not playing.
The 31-year-old has a decent CV, having played for the likes of Monaco, Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Spurs. He even won the 2011 Copa del Rey with Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. Adebayor boasts of a fairly good goalscoring record, netting 168 times in 468 matches.
