Louis van Gaal is delighted to have Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, whose versatility can help Manchester United during the team selections and substitutions. The Red Devils manager believes the French international can play in four attacking position.
Martial arrived at Old Trafford from AS Monaco on deadline day for a fee of £36m. Since joined the English giants, he scored four goals in all competitions in his first month, which saw him bag the Premier League Player of the Month for September.
Lingard, on the other hand was handed debut by the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager in his first competitive match against Swansea City last season. However, injury early in that game saw him miss most part of the sidelines.
He made his second appearance for United during their 3-0 victory over Everton. Van Gaal is delighted with the options he has with the availability of these youngsters.
“He [Martial] can play, in my opinion, four positions. He can play at seven, as a right-winger, 11 – the left-winger, the striker’s position and also at 10, I believe,” he told MUTV.
“But he has played in Monaco always in the left-winger position. That is why I put him there against Everton and also because of [Seamus] Coleman. I think he’s a very good right full-back so we could take benefit of the qualities of Martial also.
“Lingard’s competitor is Juan Mata and his competitor is also, for example, Ander Herrera or Wayne Rooney or, when he is played on the left, because he can also play on the left, his competitor was Memphis [Depay]. So it’s not easy to come in.
“He trained from the beginning, also in the United States of America, and maybe you remember his goal [against Barcelona]? He played very good in that match and trained very well. He has to wait for his moment and maybe his moment has arrived now.”
